Would you be able to share the FBML version of the widget on this wiki somewhere so it's easy for people to find and copy? It's a great idea :)

Now added to the Queen's page - very useful. No-one else seems to have had trouble but it didn't display correctly for me to begin with (overlapped by the box below) - I managed to fix it by deleting the first chunk of code. I'm sure our visitors are going to love it!

In my experience CAPTCHAs aren't even accessible to people with no visual impairment! It usually takes me around three goes to get anything that uses a CAPTCHA.

Thanks for keeping this current, omassey! I've been trying to find other UK libraries for Nuffield to follow and there are surprisingly few. Twitter seems to be much more popular in North America...

Very very good point from Meredith Farkas: "It's not all about the tech - why 2.0 tech fails". Important to make sure the blog is shared with others and not on your private email address so if you go (and especially on bad terms... things happen) the professional blog stays. It's quite easy also to invite people to participate (on Blogger go to Customise/Settings/Permissions)

"How can we make sure to include in this New Era people who can't see? " i quote from the article cited earlier: "Our partnerships with mainstream companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, and PeopleSoft allows us to make Window-Eyes one of the primary tools for testing product accessibility." taken from http://www.gwmicro.com/Window-Eyes/ Looks great, but it's not great enough: there should be a system kind to macintosh and linux system. Is there such a thing? (and yes, seeing the html codes in my blogger account, I understand that traditional code reading softwares for people with a visual disability, must be like hell......... so much code to read before getting to the core information! Speaking of which, I wonder how code reading softwares are coping with the drop down menus in ouls main page, is there an alternative page so far?)

Interesting post on the TALL blog on how students use internet/Web 2.0 at http://tallblog.conted.ox.ac.uk/index.php/2008/07/23/not-natives-immigrants-but-visitors-residents/
TALL (Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning) is part of ContEd and their website is worth a look http://www.tall.ox.ac.uk/ Of particular interest is the JISC Isthmus project they are running - link under Current Research on their home page and referred to in the Blog message

Interesting blog post comparing 3 major photosharing sites (Flickr, Photobucket, Zoomr): http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/05/20/photosharing-comparing-flickr-photobucket-and-zooomr/
Seems to me that with all these (and other sites like Picasaweb and the Kodak one) it really depends on what we're wanting to use photosharing sites for, as Angela said above...

Just noticed that Oxford University has been added as a search category on librarything.com (yes I am sitting here doing my own cataloguing of a Sunday evening) - wondering who allowed that? Think it's a great idea, but just curious to see we allowed it!

RE: Oxford University added to Librarything.com

Thanks Owen. I had trouble accessing OLIS through librarything, but I think that's an OLIS issue not a librarything issue. Coincidentally, having read the posts associated with the link you mention, it seems not all catalogues are freely available, although that may have changed.
I also wish the search features were better - it's great with newer material which have ISBNs, but I have a few pre-ISBN books (I love 2ndhand shops!) which I've had trouble finding and I'm sure Oxford or the BL must have them, but I can't search by publisher easily. I shall likely have to add them manually, which sort of defeats the purpose of being able to search a host of different libraries.
Having said that, I still love librarything.com!!!!

I've been using Netvibes as a start page, and have found it good for the embedded RSS feed reader, but not much else. It does have widgets for Hotmail and Facebook and other things, but I prefer to just have them open on my machine as extra tabs on my browser and flick to them. I find it easier to work with that way - how about others?

I too use Netvibes as my start page (after trying iGoogle and then Pageflakes) and although the majority of my content there is feeds I find it very useful for the other web tools e.g. web search, calculator, currency converter. It saves a lot of time having all of these tools in one place. For me the best thing is being able to carry my bookmarks from one computer to another as I can work at up to three terminals in a day.
I don't currently have widgets to webmail or Facebook on my start page because I don't find it a hassle logging in to these separately and find the functionality is better going to the sites direct.

I think the key is how much motivation there is for people to use it as it will just die unless there is a real strong reason for using it.

Would you be interested in receiving your OLIS accessions lists directly in RSS format? It's something the OLIS team have been thinking of offering for several years, but hasn't been high priority due to other tasks and the fact that nobody asked us for it ;-) If there's a demand for it then I think the OLIS team would be keen to investigate this. (Time and other tasks permitting, of course.)

The Academic Libraries section definitely shows a US bias - not that that's a bad thing! - but it's interesting that this is where it seems to be coming from.
