Thoughts about wikis
This page is for use during the Web 2:0 study day (Thursday 27th March).
Participants are invited to add their thoughts on how they might use a wiki in their library service, and what features and functions they like and dislike in existing wikis...
Wikis could be useful for FAQs and as a staff manual. A good wiki has a clear purpose! Emma Sullivan, Staff Devp.
I think a wiki would be excellent for a staff manual - I liked Jane's example of combining a manual with a noticeboard
I think WIKIs would be excellent for working groups as an alternative to using email for discussion. Also we are starting work on one which will have information on topics such as effective searching which can be a testbed for an eventual online tutorial - Judy Reading
Wikis have been useful to me in contributing to collaborative projects at long distances - I live in Oxford but contributed to a group database design project at my Library School using a wetpaint wiki like this one. The staff manual idea is great - could it be extended to all shared network resources to which more than one person needs access.
Craig Finlay, SSL
A wiki could be great for a staff manual provided of course there is no sensitive information (as I'm not sure of a web 2.0 firewall...), I definitely want to try that at my place. Will keep you posted.
Lucile Deslignères, OULC

I think the key is how much motivation there is for people to use it as it will just die unless there is a real strong reason for using it.
