Social bookmarkingThis is a featured page

Definition

“Social bookmarking is a way for Internet users to store, organize, share and search bookmarks of web pages. In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, but depending on the service's features, may be saved privately, shared only with specific people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, via a search engine, or even randomly.”

How can libraries use social bookmarking?

  • Easy way to maintain and make available lists of links to web resources - easier than continually updating or having messy lists on 'useful links' pages on library websites?
  • Tagging allows for classification within the list
  • Newly discovered resources can be shared via RSS feeds, blog widgets, Facebook applications, and within the site to other users
  • Resource discovery: as a jumping off point, looking at who else has saved the same sites and what other links they have saved.
  • Midway point between Google and Intute - user- and librarian-mediated so more focused and meaningful than a search engine, but not as carefully or comprehensively catalogued as Intute so should offer more serendipity.
  • Users can contribute by linking to the library's list and/or saving/submitting links.
