During Web 2.0: Libraries Creating New Connections and Communities, we will be using blogs to record our experiences and thoughts of Web 2.0 technologies and how they could be useful in our libraries. These blogs will then all be linked to on the social networking wiki so that our experiences can be shared with other librarians. Before coming to the event, you will need to create your own blog.

1. Go to http://www.blogger.com. (You are welcome to use another blogging system, such as Wordpress, if you prefer, but for the purposes of this we will be using Blogger). Click on ‘create your blog now’.

2. Create your Google account to log in to Blogger. If you already have a Google account, you can go straight to the sign-in and blog creation stage.

3. Now you get to create your blog. All you need is a name for it and a URL. The URL will be displayed on the web, so choose carefully. You can change the name at any time, but you’re stuck with the URL! You might need to try a few things before you get a unique URL – click on ‘check availability’ to see if the one you’ve picked is free.

4. Now the fun part – making it look pretty! Pick a template by clicking on it – you can take a look at them more closely if you like by clicking on ‘preview template’ to see an example. Again, you can change the look of your blog any time you like so don’t worry too much if you can’t make up your mind!

5. You now have a blog! You can take a look at the URL you chose (which will be http://[yourURLchoice].blogspot.com), and can log in any time by clicking ‘Sign in’ in the top right-hand corner, or by logging in through www.blogger.com.

Before coming to the day school, it would be great if you could write a first post on your blog about what you hope to get out of the day, and your initial thoughts on Web 2.0 in libraries. If you have just created your blog, click on ‘start blogging’, which will take you straight to the posting screen. Otherwise, when you log in to your blog, you will be taken to the ‘dashboard’, where you just need to click on ‘new post’ under your blog title.

Posting is very easy. All you need to do is give your post a title, then type in the box. There are editing options along the top of the box. We will play around with more advanced options at the day school, but for now, just write away! When you’ve finished, you could give your post some labels (like tags or subject descriptions – they can be anything you like and can be used to browse the blog when there are several posts in it), then click on ‘publish post’.

Your blog is now up and running and ready to use on the day!
